After a lackluster primary vote by members of the Democratic Party, especially among Latino voters, George Soros and other leaders of the left are concerned. While the Republican party was well represented in the recent primaries, a surprising lack of votes from Democrats meant millions of missing voters. This does not bode well for Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. A large number of formerly-active Democrats are clearly disillusioned with what they see as a broken party.
Billionaire political commentator and activist George Soros has reacted to this development with grave concern. He and other wealthy liberals have dedicated millions of dollars to help activate the 400,000 potential voters in immigrant and Latino communities. He sees them as important and much-needed swing voters that can stop the ultra right wing march of Donald J. Trump. The group led by Soros is called Immigrant Voters Win, a super PAC that has so far raised $15 million. Their goal is to add significant funding to all the smaller groups in states with growing Latino and Asian communities, including Colorado, Florida, and Nevada. They are banking on Latinos being incensed by Trump’s neo-Nazi rhetoric.
Cristóbal Alex has stated about Trump, “From the first day he attacked us, he called us rapists and thieves. We could have a giant wall built and millions of families broken apart. The country is on the precipice… This is really taking the gloves off.” As the Latino Victory Project’s president, Mr. Alex heads the national group that will also be funded by Soros’ super PAC.
As an activist who has long supported educating immigrants, such as he once was, in the intricacies of the U.S. political scene, George Soros is alarmed by Trump. He is especially concerned over Trump’s hard boiled right-wing plans to register and track all Muslims in the U.S., as well as claiming he will deport millions of immigrants.
Mr Soros said, “The intense anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim rhetoric that has been fueled by the Republican primary is deeply offensive! It is harmful to our democracy and to our national interests. There should be consequences for the outrageous statements and proposals that we’ve regularly heard.”
George Soros is no stranger to such inflammatory speeches. He was born in Hungary in 1930, and so heard just such speeches from Adolf Hitler before his Nazi troops invaded his native country. The terror of Nazi occupation when George was a young lad left a deep and lasting impression on him. He survived and was still living in Hungary when communist forces took over at the end of World War II. He escaped Cold War Hungary as a political refugee to England in 1947. He graduated from the top business school, the London School of Economics. He has several books that have been published, which voice his concerns with U.S. foreign policy in Eastern Europe.
